Old bazaar (Point)

Let’s follow the footsteps of Evliya Çelebi, how he describes the Old Bazaar of Gjirokastra in his book "Seyahatname" (Book of Travels): On the cliffs of the northern side of the castle is the Old Bazaar, called the Castle Bazaar, with 40 small shops. This bazaar has wooden gates on both sides, very similar to those of a covered bazaar, which guards close every night. Once the gates are closed there is no way to get from the open city to the fortress on this side. Only the gate on the side of the prayer-grounds is accessible. Today, the Old Bazaar is characterized by calmness, and appears very different from the New Bazaar. The first house you’ll see on your right will be that of the Xhelili family. A masterpiece of local architecture, which is known for its whitewashed arches. About 100 meters further, a narrow alley leads to the Saviour Transfiguration Church. If you turn back and take the path to the left, you will be able to see again authentic houses of the XVIII-XIX century, such as Papadhopuli's house.
