The church of saint... ... (Area)

The church of Saint Todri is located near the main entrance of the Berat Castle. It is a single-nave church with a wooden roof, just like the other churches in the castle. Regarding its construction, the church has traces from different periods. Based on what is possible to deduct from the construction technique of its walls, the oldest is the eastern wall, which belongs to the period before the ottoman invasion.

The church has a main hall and within the surrounding walls, there are two side rooms that have served as parish halls. The apse of the main hall is quite interesting; the placement of reused Paleo-Christian fragments in its windows it’s quite obvious. In the northern part, a stone relief-tomb is walled up, showing an inverted wreath with an inscription erased within, which the Austrian archaeologist Prashniker described during his visit to the fortress in period of the First World War. Researchers do not exclude the possibility that the church may have been rebuilt on the ruins of an older church during the Late Antiquity

What is known for sure is that the church of Saint Theodore was painted by Onufri in the middle of the 16th century; in the center of the painting that has withstood the test of time, is the figure of Saint Mary sitting on the throne with the little Christ in her lap. The scene of the “Annunciation” stands out next to it.
